JML Music: The Jazz Mad Lab's main goal for this album was to attempt to bring the group into a state of sustaining existence. JML aimed to achieve this goal by creating music that can last for many years, rather than catering too heavily to trends that may not be around in five years. This is where the "experiment" comes into play. However, "experimental," to the Jazz Mad Lab, doesn't always mean dissonance or extremes (of course we definitely get there sometimes), nor does it always mean "out" or total alienation of that which is familiar. We believe that "experimental" in jazz will always mean something different each time a jazz "experiment" is conducted. That being said, for this album, the "experiment" is to attempt to concoct a new sound by means of combining familiar sounds that are used in both familiar and unfamiliar ways. Of course a worthwhile experiment is never about absolute chance, there must be a combination of chance of and awareness. That is not always the approach for some musicians, but if you are attempting to create something you hope is worthwhile and long-standing, or at least to be set on that course, there must be substantial awareness of where music as come from and where it's going. Of course no one really knows where music will be in the future, you just try to aim in that general direction and see where you end up. As for the results of this experiment.....only time will tell!
